OpenEMR is a state-of-the-art electronic health record that has been fully translated into English (American, Indian), Danish, Dutch, French, Greek, Portuguese (Brazilian, European), Spanish, Swedish and Turkish. The system has been certified for “Meaningful Use” in the United States, has been adopted for international use by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and by the Peace Corp. These “Meaningful Use” criteria include 25 core features that are generally useful for care givers that have appropriate access to the requisite technology. These features are listed in the enclosed table(s). OpenEMR is a web enabled system with integrated scheduling and electronic billing, The MySQL database allows for integration with other open source tools. IPPF has used this architecture to their advantage to integrate Pentaho for business intelligence reporting and to develop a "data warehouse" that can receive monthly de-identified data from OpenEMR in XML format for aggregation and reporting at a national level. OpenEMR is extremely flexible with a wide variety of ways to add medical record formats that meet the varied needs of different cultures as well as specialties. Many of the format changes can be done easily without any programming skills. The open source community is very large and flourishing. OpenEMR has been downloaded in excess of 150,000 copies in 174 countries.

Samuel T. Bowen, MD Biography

Dr. Samuel Bowen has substantial training and experience in primary care, urgent care, emergency, and occupational care environments. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Rice University in Houston, Texas and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 1987. Dr. Bowen is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Bowen established his first medical practice in Cornelius, N.C. in 1987 and served as company physician for many of the local industries. His largest contract was with Ingersoll Rand, serving as the company physician for the Small Compressor Division, Large Compressor Division and International Corporate Office.

Dr. Bowen relocated to Hickory, N.C. in 1992 and served as an emergency room physician at Frye Regional Medical Center until January 1999. He established Bowen Primary & Urgent Care in 1998 and is currently on staff at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, N.C. Dr. Bowen’s other interests include computer programming, which prompted his involvement in developing free, open source software. He began using OpenEMR in his practice, Bowen Primary & Urgent Care, in January 2004 and has been involved in the development process. He has been an active contributor to forums involving free open source medical software and has helped many physicians and IT professionals learn how to install and operate OpenEMR. He has contributed clinical forms to OpenEMR and released them to the public under the GPL licensing. Dr. Bowen has been involved in the OpenEMR project since 2003. Dr. Bowen organized the voluntary contributions and helped fund the ONC Ambulatory “Meaningful Use” Certification of OpenEMR. He serves as Executive Director of the OEMR non-profit and is the webmaster of the home web page of Dr. Bowen has extensive experience in teaching and public lectures in health and the free open source electronic health record software, OpenEMR.
