My talk will be about how open hardware can be extremely beneficial to the film industry, and how it has a place in its future. In its current state, the industry has no professional open source based tools or software. Projects such as the Apertus open cinema project aim to alleviate this need. The film industry is an ever-changing place, and an open standard could allow filmmakers and film companies to fine tune exactly what they want from their equipment. As part of the Apertus project I will be providing insight into how exactly open hardware and software-based projects can bring a whole new aspect to an industry full of closed-sourced hardware and software. In addition to this I will also be giving a demonstration of some of these open hardware based tools that are in development.
Micheal Green is a current film student at Full Sail University in the United States. He has been enthusiastically helping with the Apertus Open Cinema project since late 2010. He currently is focusing on creating the worlds first open hardware base wireless follow focus for use with cameras.
