Typical television head-ends consist of simple operations : satellite acquisition, descrambling, transcoding or transrating, recording and play-back. The speaker will demonstrate how open-source software can help building a complex television head-end solution. He will also explain how it has led to the creation of OpenHeadend, a commercial structure selling products based on OSS, and support.
The speaker was in 1998 one of the founders of the VLC media player project. He is also the main author of OSS projects DVBlast, multicat and biTStream, hosted by the VideoLAN organization. For almost ten years he has been designing, implementing and maintaining the television head-end of a major French network operator with more than 300 channels. He recently co-founded OpenHeadend, a provider of head-end solutions.
